  • Steel framing members support
  • Wall paneling in your desired color
  • Fastening hardware
  • Anchors systems based on your chosen foundation type
  • Customization features and accessories such as gables, trim, and wainscoting
  • The windows and doors are chosen as part of your design

These components are created in a manufacturing facility, pre-measured, cut to the needed specifications, and packaged up for delivery to you.

Customization Options for Metal Building Kits

One factor that sets steel buildings apart from the competition is their customizability. From top to bottom, these structures can be tailored to your needs. So let’s take a look at just a few ways you can make them work for your needs.

  • Size Options

Metal buildings come in a wide variety of sizes, allowing you to design a structure as small or as large as you’d like. From small backyard sheds to fully finished warehouses, there are no limits to how large you can go. However, it must be noted that once you reach a certain size threshold, installation of your metal building will require large equipment, such as lifts and excavators, to complete.

  • Numerous Color Options

In most cases, you’ll be able to choose between one of more than 16 premium color options for your structure. You can even mix and match your trim and roofing colors to make your building truly stand out in the crowd.

  • Doors

Every enclosed building will need doors in some way or another. And with custom metal buildings, you’ll be able to add as many as you need. From standard walk-in doors to roll-up garage doors, design your structure how you want it. You can even do frame-outs for custom aftermarket doors!

  • Windows

You’ll also be able to customize your structure with as many windows as you need. This is a fantastic option if you’re designing a building that requires a ton of natural light. And if you want to add custom windows, you can have your structure designed with these frame-outs in place.

  • Anchoring Systems

The anchor system you’ll receive for your metal building will depend entirely on your chosen foundation type. These include a mobile home or auger anchors for dirt, spiked anchors for asphalt, and specialized bolts for concrete foundations.

  • Framing and Paneling Gauges

As an industry standard, most metal buildings will come with 14-gauge framing and 29-gauge paneling. However, if you live in a region that sees high winds or heavy snow accumulation, you’ll be able to opt for thicker 12 gauge frames and 26 gauge panels for that extra bit of added strength.

  • Certification

While not a customization option, some metal building providers will offer both non-certified and certified buildings. Certification is a system that ensures a structure’s ability to handle high winds and heavy snow loads in each region. Non-certificated buildings come with none of these guarantees.

How to Prep for the Installation of Your Metal Building

When it comes to any construction project, proper planning is the key to ensuring that everything transpires smoothly. Failing to plan properly can result in significant hiccups and headaches. So, let’s look at a few ways to prep for your new structure.

  1. Location : The location of your metal building will dictate much about how it can be used. As such, you’ll want to choose a site that rests above natural water runoff and near pre-established utilities such as electricity and plumbing.
Your building site will also need to be cleared of debris and graded to ensure that it’s completely level.
  1. Dimensions : The second step will be to measure your site and determine how large of a structure you need. In most cases, you’ll want to work closely with a dedicated building expert to ensure you have the right structure size for your needs.
  1. Foundations : Before your components arrive, you’ll want to lay the foundation of your structure according to the pre-determined dimensions. When it comes to laying foundations, it also pays to seek third-party contractors to complete the job. A licensed and bonded concrete specialist can ensure that your foundation is perfectly sized and leveled- so you don’t have to!
  1. Permits and Regulations : In most areas of the US, local municipalities will have specific rules regarding the permits you’ll need before you can begin a construction project. As such, you’ll need to work closely with local building authorities to determine which permits you’ll need and what regulations you must follow.
  1. Weather Severity : It is important to design your building so that it can withstand its environment in order to ensure its durability. If you live in a region of the US that experiences nasty storms or vicious winds, you’ll want to reinforce your building with thicker paneling and framing.
  1. Choose a Quality Provider : There are tons of metal building providers. And some may offer better steel building prices than others. However, you’ll want to choose a provider with a proven track record for delivering quality structures and providing dedicated customer service.
  2. Utilities : As mentioned earlier, you’ll want to ensure that your building site is close to readily available utilities. This includes power access and plumbing. You can save tons of money on your metal building project by handling this early.

How to Install Your Metal Building Kit

Once you’ve laid the groundwork for your structure, it’s time to break ground. Here’s what you’ll need to know to get the most out of your structure’s installation.

Lay the Foundation

If you have experience laying concrete, you’ll already have the skills necessary to plan and lay your foundation. However, if you’re not familiar with this aspect of construction, you’ll likely want to hire professionals to handle this part of the job. In fact, most metal building manufacturers do not encourage laying your own concrete foundation. But if you’re going it alone, you’ll need to correctly measure your concrete slab and place the necessary stakes and tape to create your building footprint. Once that’s complete, you’ll build the concrete form to hold the liquid concrete material.

After completing this step, you’ll need to lay a gravel base and pack it down until it’s uniform, level, and at a minimum of 4” depth. Most foundations will also require reinforcement rods or ribbed steel bars that add an extra layer of strength to the concrete. You’ll need to place several of these across the span of your foundation and attach them using ties.

Once the rebar is in place, you’ll need to mist the gravel and rebar with water. Concrete will become stronger when exposed to this moisture during the curing process.

The next step will be to mix and pour the concrete. After this is complete, you’ll immediately need to cut your form stakes level with your frame and begin to level the surface of your concrete pad.

Now that the concrete is set, you’ll need to edge your concrete and finish the surface with a trowel, float, or brush. Once this process is finished, you’ll need to allow ample time for your concrete pad to set. During this timeframe, it’s beneficial to mist your concrete to ensure a cohesive bond. In most cases, the curing process will take several days.

Anchoring Your Foundation

Now that your concrete pad is in place, it’s time to lay the anchors. This will require you to measure and drill the pilot holes in both your concrete pad and your metal building foundation rails. Once properly measured, you’ll lay the base rails and attach them with the specialized bolts that are included with your metal building kit.

Install the Framing

With your building’s base rails in place, your next step will be to install the framing, beginning with the vertical support columns. After erecting these, you’ll move across your building’s footprint, installing the metal trusses and horizontal support beams.

Roof and Wall Installation

After the skeleton of your structure is complete, you’ll need to begin assembling the roofing and wall paneling using the components and fasteners that have been provided in your building kit.

Accessories

Once the majority of the building is pitched, the last step will be to install the frames for windows, doors, and any accessories that may be included. If you’re using the windows and doors in your kit, this aspect should be pretty straightforward.
